DIY Mantel Decorated for Christmas

5:00 am by kim 8 Comments

Hi friends, It’s the most wonderful time of the year again and I’m sharing this DIY mantel I made and decorated for Christmas.

So settle in, grab a refreshment and join my friends and I from the Seasonal Simplicity Christmas Series hosted by Krista from The Happy Housie.

If you’ve followed me for a while you’ll know that I had every intention of adding a mantel as soon as we moved into our new home. I was looking for old barn beams but realized they would be too heavy to install without a lot of tweaking from yours truly…I knew I’d have to  make my own lighter version. Well it’s taken me 10 months to do but I made one just in time to decorate for Christmas!

DIY Mantel Decorated for Christmas

I love It! It’s added so much character to the space and I wish I had done it sooner.

Coastal Farmhouse Summer Home Tour

Here’s a picture from my summer tour. It looks so empty with just the TV and fireplace and really needed another element to make it look finished.

Below I’m sharing a bit of a tutorial on how I made the mantel. It’s not a complete tutorial because my camera fell and my lens broke! But you’ll get the gist of the how to. It’s pretty simple if you know how to use a saw and a nail gun.

DIY Mantel Decorated for Christmas

I started with 3 pieces of non-knotty pine in 1″x 8″x 5′. I had the home depot cut them for me to save time. Make sure you pick straight and non-warped pieces. You’ll need a little extra to apply to each end so one of my boards was a 1″x8″x8′. I also used a 2″x4″x8′ to use as brackets to sit my mantel on.

DIY Mantel Decorated for Christmas

You simply apply glue on both sides of two boards lengthways.

Place your third board on top

Nail it.

Measure your opening and cut a piece wood to fit in each end.

Glue and nail that piece in. (I used the ends to try out different colours of stains). You basically have a hollow box. The box will sit on brackets I made out of a 2″x4″ which are screwed into the studs. I simply sat the box/mantel on top of the brackets and nailed them in!

DIY Mantel Decorated for Christmas

You don’t need to do this step but I wanted my mantel to look like one solid piece of wood so I glued on some veneer at each end. I let the glue/veneer dry overnight and then sanded down all the edges. I mixed together 2 different stains to achieve this custom colour you see below. It was actually a pretty easy project!

DIY Mantel Decorated for Christmas

Even though there’s not a lot of space to use due to having the TV above, I was able to add some garland along with brass candlesticks. My motto lately is “Simple”.

DIY Mantel Decorated for Christmas

I used two different faux garlands here and just draped them over 3 little nails. I added a battery operated fairy light garland and then added some extra fresh eucalyptus picks. Once they dry out I have some faux ones that I’ll add to it. I love the light and airy look it gives!

DIY Mantel Decorated for Christmas

Since there are 10 of us this year, I decided to put up only one stocking for my Grandson. I didn’t want to fill the space full of stockings!

One Room Challenge | Modern Farmhouse Bathroom | The Reveal

7:46 pm by kim 40 Comments

Hello friends and welcome to Week 7 of the One Room Challenge and the final reveal of my Modern Farmhouse bathroom! Today is the day that designers and bloggers have been working on and documenting for the last six weeks. Transforming spaces, designing, demoing, styling. For some of us It’s been 6 weeks of excitement, breakdowns, sore backs and questions as to why the heck we agreed to do it! Lol. Well today is the day we share the culmination of everything we’ve been working towards. You can follow along with my previous weeks to see the process here:

One Room Challenge Modern Farmhouse Bathroom The Reveal

I decided to do the main bathroom on the second floor. It’s small and is basically used as a guest bathroom for my daughter and son in law when they come to visit. I had recently painted it white in the hopes of making it a little brighter but nothing could brighten the black tiles that covered the tub and shower enclosure. I thought it would be the perfect candidate for a reno/makeover.

So let’s see what we started with!

The Before:

The After:

I basically threw everything that I love into one small room! Shiplap, white subway tiles, cement tiles, wood, linen, what’s not to love?

Modern Farmhouse Bathroom #Makeover

This black and white floor tile is the star of the show and I absolutely love it! The tile was definitely worth the splurge and using it in a smaller space made it more affordable. It may be on trend now but I didn’t mind making a trendy statement in a little space. I also used white subway tile, It’s simple, classic and you can never go wrong with that!

Modern Farmhouse Bathroom #Makeover

The Metrie Shiplap was one of the easiest projects we did in this bathroom and next to the floor tile, is my favourite thing! It’s Metrie’s Complete shiplap and comes pre-primed and pre-painted in  “Polar White”  a gorgeous clean, crisp white. I can’t tell you how beautiful this shiplap looks in person. It’s has a beautiful and uniform finish and looks like it was professionally installed. I want this all over my home now! You can see how we installed it here.

This mosaic tile is the star of the show and I absolutely love it! The tile was definitely worth the splurge and using it in a smaller space made it more affordable. It maybe on trend now but I didn't mind making a trendy statement in a little space.

I changed up the original lighting I had chosen in my vision board. I realized that we didn’t have the room to have the sconces I had planned on. The lighting I installed is part of  the Home Decorators Collection lighting from the Home Depot and is perfect for the space.

Modern Farmhouse Bathroom #Makeover

Isn’t this little wooden stool so cute?  It’s the perfect size for my small bathroom and a great place to set a book, cup and candle on when you’re taking a bath. All these great accessories in our bathroom are from Homesense.

Modern Farmhouse Bathroom #Makeover

We chose to use the over the door rack to hang all the towels on. I loved this shiplap so much I didn’t want to ruin it by placing hooks into it! I wanted to keep the bathroom as clean and clutter free as possible. The rack is also great for holding some bathrobes for your guests when they come to visit. I found these lovely turkish towels and bathrobes  along with the rack at Homesense!

Thanks so much for following along on this makeover journey with us! This was our first real reno and there were a lot of ups and downs, problems that we weren’t sure how to deal with and lots of youtube video watching! We were the designers, contractors and tradesmen for this project. Next time I think I just want to design and leave the rest of the work to the real tradesmen 😉 Thanks to Linda from Calling it Home for hosting another great Challenge. Be sure to follow along with all the other designers and participants to see their finished projects.

Bathroom Makeover | One Room Challenge | Week 6

11:38 pm by kim 12 Comments

Hi everyone and welcome  to Week 6 of the One Room Challenge! If you’re new here, I’m a guest participant in Linda’s from Calling it Home One Room Challenge. A biannual event where a group of designers and bloggers  chronicle a makeover of one room in their home in 6 weeks. We’re on week 6 right now but this year the challenge has been extended for another week. So next week will be the final reveal and I’m so excited to share our makeover with you all!

You can follow along with the previous weeks here:

Bathroom Makeover One Room Challenge Week 6

This week’s progress:

This week we finally got the grout done on the floor tile. We used a charcoal coloured grout that fits right in with the charcoal of the tiles. We used a slow drying grout and had to stay off the floor for 72 hours. It was wonderful! We basically had the weekend off which was great because the hubby and I needed the break. Don’t those tiles look amazing?

Once the grout was dried and cured we were able to get back in there and put the baseboards on.

One Room Challenge Fall 2017 Week 6

We also got the vanity in after the hubby did some (a lot) of maneuvering with the pipes. Yahoo!

One Room Challenge Bathroom Makeover

Remember those nasty pipes that came up out of the floor that couldn’t be moved? Well the hubby used the Metrie baseboards to make a box around them. It’s hardly noticeable, unless you’re down on the floor where I was when I took this photo. Once I caulk the corners and fill in the nail holes it will look great.

One Room Challenge Fall 2017 Week 6

One Room Challenge Fall 2017 Week 6

I’m so glad the vanity fit! It looks great with the gorgeous shiplap and tiles. These pictures don’t do the room justice.

One Room Challenge Fall 2017 Week 6

Task list before the final reveal:

  • Add the mirror
  • Install the toilet
  • Caulk the baseboards, sink and tub
  • Install the tub/shower hardware.
  • Accessorize

Well that’s it for this week.  It’s such a small room that there’s only so much to show without revealing it all..and that’s for next week! You can subscribe to the blog to make sure you don’t miss out on any posts. They’ll come straight to your inbox.

Blessings,

Kim

One Room Challenge Fall 2017 | Week 5 | Shiplap time!

Welcome back to the One Room Challenge Fall 2017 week 5, it’s time to get our shiplap on!

If you’re new here, hello! You can follow along with the previous One Room Challenge weeks here:

One Room Challenge Fall 2017 Week 5 Shiplap Time!

(This post has been sponsored by Metrie, all thoughts and opinions are my own)

This week we had some help from Metrie who offered their gorgeous Metrie Complete®  Shiplap for our Modern Farmhouse Bathroom Makeover. The shiplap comes already primed and painted in “Polar White”  which is a beautiful crisp white and you know I love me some white 😉

One Room Challenge Week 5 Shiplap Time!

I have to say this was one of the easier projects for this challenge! We’ve applied shiplap before using thin plywood boards and made our own spaces using coins. With the tongue and groove feature on these shiplap boards there was no more watching our quarters and loonies rolling away on the floor! It was simpler to lay the boards and it looked so much more uniform. The fact that the boards are all pre-painted a beautiful satin finish also saved a lot of time. Instead of filling nail holes with wood filler,  sanding then priming and painting, you fill in the holes with a wax and then buff. Metrie offers a Metrie Complete finishing kit with everything you need to finish your project:

Metrie Complete finishing kit

How We Did it and What You’ll Need:

One Room Challenge Week 5 Applying Shiplap

  1. Find the studs in your wall with a stud finder.

One Room Challenge Week 5 Applying Shiplap

2. Mark the studs  and then use a chalk line or a level to mark them down the wall.

One Room Challenge Week 5 Applying Shiplap

3. Some people start from the bottom, but I like to have full boards around the ceiling line. Place your first       board with tongue side down and use a level to make sure your first board is level.

One Room Challenge Week 5 Applying Shiplap

4. Add your boards and nail them using your nail gun. Where you nail into the tongue, you’ll need to fill in your nail hole before you place your next board. It’s much easier filling those holes before you add the next  board. (Don’t ask me how I know!)

One Room Challenge Week 5 Applying Shiplap

5. To fill in your holes,  use your wax stick or putty jar. I mostly used the wax stick.

One Room Challenge Week 5 Applying Shiplap

6. You can use your scraper card or a putty knife  to remove any excess wax.

One Room Challenge Week 5 Applying Shiplap

7. Use the abrasion pad to buff out and smooth the area.

One Room Challenge Week 5 Applying Shiplap

8. We applied cove molding to the ceiling and in the corners to make the seams uniform. we also caulked with Metrie’s caulking. All the products in the Builder finishing kit comes in the same “polar white” colour as the shiplap so that everything matches.

One Room Challenge Week 5 Applying Shiplap

Yes that’s my famous camouflage plant! I’m using it to hide those unsightly pipes sticking out of the floor.

One Room Challenge Week 5 Applying Shiplap

One Room Challenge Week 5 Applying Shiplap

One Room Challenge Week 5 Applying Shiplap

There is still a lot to do. I’m so grateful for the added week!

  • We still need to grout the floor tile.
  • Once the floor tile is grouted we’ll be able to put on the last two pieces of subway tile near the floor.
  • Add the baseboards.
  • Finish the caulking
  • Clean up the ceiling
  • Put the ceiling fan back on. (Still not sure why that is off lol!)
  • Put the vanity together and pray it fits!
  • Bring the toilet back in.
  • Hang the mirror.
  • Install the taps and hardware.

Thanks so much for joining along on our makeover/reno challenge! Just a reminder that a week has been added onto our schedule, so the final reveal will be on November 16th. To see some more makeover/renos you can follow along with all the other bloggers and designers here.

One Room Challenge Fall 2017 | Week 2 | Demo Week

8:45 pm by kim 16 Comments

Demo Week

Welcome to week 2 of the ORC. If you’re just joining in with me today, here is a link to week 1 where I explain my plans to turn this dated room into a Modern Farmhouse bathroom. We’ve all  watched the home makeover shows where the “demo day” is  that amazing day where you’re able to start tearing out walls, tiles and aged appliances etc. At the end of the day everything has been removed and you’re left with a clean slate to start building from. Well folks, as the old saying goes, “only on TV”!  Unless you have a team of workers working behind you, there is no such thing as a demo day! It’s taken the hubby days to remove tile, drywall, a vanity, mirror, toilet and the dreaded floor tile. This One Room Challenge week 2, has kicked our butts. What we thought would be that lauded “demo day” has turned into the seemingly never ending “demo week”!

One Room Challenge Fall 2017

So this is what happened…get ready for some non-pretty pics.

Week 2 ORC, demo week

At first my hubby tried to take each tile off at a time. With the hopes we could save the drywall behind it and not have to worry about replacing it. No. somewhere or somehow you damage that drywall behind and you end up having to take it all down. After this lesson was learned, my hubby just took the drywall and tile down together in sheets. It was a much faster process doing it this way.

Week 2 ORC, demo week

Week 2 ORC, demo week

When it came time to take out the vanity, we noticed there were no water shut-off valves. So after turning off the water in the whole house and many trips to the Home Depot later, we were able to avoid a flood and remove the vanity…only to find this!

Week 2 ORC, demo week

The water pipes come up straight out of the floor! There is also this gigantic black drainpipe jutting out of the floor and into the wall. If you look at my mood/vision board you’ll notice that the vanity I wanted  was up off the floor. In fact every vanity I liked was up off the floor. It makes a smaller space seem airier and larger. Well now I have to change my plans on that vanity. This whole pipe mess will have to be covered up.

Week 2 ORC, demo week

The floor tile, mesh and concrete thingy was the worst. We finally called up a friend and we borrowed a jack hammer, yep, we ( and by “we” I mean the hubby)  were jack hammering this room until late last night. We finally got it all up. Other than removing a few staples and a few stray pieces of dry wall, I think we’re done the demo stage. Phew! When things look like this, it’ hard to believe it will ever be done!

So now before those pictures burn a hole into our retinas, let’s take a look at how I envisioned this room to look. It may completely change by the time I get through but nevertheless  lets focus on my pretty vision.

Modern Farmhouse Bathroom

My vision for how this space can look is the only thing that’s keeping me sane at this point. This reno thing is not for the faint of heart! Don’t forget to join me back here next week to follow along as well as pop in and see all the other participants, I’m hoping there will be major progress in this room by then. Please let there be progress!! Lol.

One Room Challenge Fall 2017 | Week 1 | Our Modern Farmhouse Bathroom

8:54 pm by kim 14 Comments

One Room Challenge Fall 2017 | Week 1

Call me crazy but I’m doing it again! This will be my second time participating as a guest in the biannual room makeover series called the One Room Challenge hosted by Linda from Calling it Home. Twenty featured design bloggers are chosen to participate, as well as 200 plus guest Participants to make over a room in six weeks!  So much decor and makeover inspiration to check out on the ORC site….And so the madness begins…again!

One Room Challenge Fall 2017

To say I’m a little nervous is an understatement! The last time I participated in the One Room Challenge we were making over our office space. We applied board and batten, hung a barn door and the rest was decor and cosmetic changes. This time around we will be making over our small main bathroom and there will be demoing involved people, Eek! This bathroom is used by my daughters when they come to visit and stay in the guest room. When it’s clean and the shower curtain is pulled across, it can almost look pretty. I even had my daughter do a fresh coat of paint on it a few months back. But that black tile has been the bane of my existence (a little dramatic I know) since we bought our home. It’s the one thing I told my husband had to go! The vanity was passible when we first moved in but it has served it’s purpose and is ready to go as well.  So let me share this room with you.

Here is the before (It sounds better than right now, because these photos are a little embarrassing!) Please don’t judge. Yes there is a missing  knob on the  vanity door.

Bathroom Before Pic

Maybe I wasn’t being too dramatic when I said that the black tile was the bane of my existence?!

Bathroom before photo

One Room Challenge bathroom before photos.

So let’s move on to what I hope our after will look like:

Mood board

So here is the moodboard/vision I have for my new Modern Farmhouse Bathroom:

Modern Farmhouse Bathroom

I placed all my favourite things in this moodboard to achieve this modern farmhouse look. It’s a look that will go well with my coastal farmhouse/cottage vibe I have going on in the rest of my home and I love every element from colour to texture.

 Plan of Action

  • Remove the black tile and replace with plain white subway tile.
  • Apply white modern shiplap by Metrie to the rest of the room.
  • Change out the hardware in the shower/tub stall.
  • Do something creative with the floor tiles.
  • Remove the old vanity and replace it with something more up to date.
  • Remove the builder basic mirror and replace it with a new round one.
  • Remove the old lighting and replace it.
  • Add accessories, shower curtain, waste basket, stool etc.

It’s exhausting just reading this! You can find all the other participants here.  Don’t forget to check back next week to follow along with the process as well as to check if the hubby and I are still alive and married… Okay let’s get this party started.. Honey, get the hammer!

Bedroom Update with BEHR MARQUEE Paint

6:00 am by kim 20 Comments

We Partnered with BEHR® for this project. All thoughts, opinions and project ideas  are my own.

My master bedroom has been due for an update for a while now and although I love white, it was time to inject some colour. Dark and moody paint colours are really on trend right now and I’ve wanted to take the plunge and try something new for a while now. But as much as I love making a design statement, the thoughts of diving headlong into a room full of a dark colour scared the heck out of me! I tried out BEHR MARQUEE® Interior Paint & Primer in One, it was just the opportunity I needed to tip-toe into this new world of colour.
I had applied board and batten in my office last spring and knew I had wanted to try it again in my bedroom. It really lends to the coastal cottage vibe of my home and works perfectly for those of us who want to try a more dramatic colour but are a little timid to commit to a full room of it.

Bedroom Update with BEHR MARQUEE Paint

Here is the bedroom before… kind of blah right?

Bedroom Update with Behr Marquee Paint and Board and Batten

Here is the After… amazing what a bit of paint can do! Follow along and we’ll show you how we did it.

Master Bedroom Update

Board and Batten:

You’ll need:

  • MDF boards in the size of your choice
  • Brad Nailer
  • Table Saw
  • Jig Saw
  • Level
  • Wood filler
  • Latex Caulking

The hubby and I removed everything from the room so we would have space to work.

We started by removing the existing baseboards, a bit of a pain I know but we wanted all the board pieces to match up evenly and this base trim was just too thin.

Bedroom Makeover with Behr Marquee Paint

We used the 1/2″ x 3 1/2″ MDF pre-primed base boards in the valupak from the Home Depot. They come in 8′ lengths and there are 10 pieces in the valupak. This was used for all the board and batten in the room, approximately 3 valupaks.

Mater Bedroom Update

Next we applied our MDF baseboards  all around the room using a brad nailer.

Master Bedroom update

Once the  baseboards were applied, we rested the vertical pieces on top of the baseboards starting in the corners. Making sure they were level! Our vertical boards were 59″ in height. You can decide how tall you want your board and batten to be. It was roughly 2/3 of our 8′ walls.

Master Bedroom Update with Board and Batten and Paint

This next part can be tricky and includes that four lettered word “Math”! My husband was the one who figured this part out. We started by laying our boards against the wall to see approximately how far apart we wanted  them to be. Not all of your walls will be the same size so you may find that on one wall your boards are 21 inches apart and on another they are 19 inches apart. As long as they look uniform and there isn’t  that big of a difference from wall to wall. Remember to measure twice and nail once! Make sure that each board is level before you nail too.

Master Bedroom Update with Board and Batten and Behr Marquee© Paint

For outside corners we just butted the joints up. We didn’t bother with tricky angle cuts as we’ll be filling in all the joints with wood filler and/or caulking. We then laid the upper horizontal boards across. Don’t worry if there are some small gaps, you’ll be filling them in with wood filler.

Master Bedroom Update with Board and Batten and Paint

When all our boards were applied we used wood filler to fill the nail holes and gaps where MDF meets MDF. Once it was dry we lightly sanded to a smooth finish.

Master Bedroom Update with board and batten and Behr Marquee Paint

We added latex caulking wherever the boards met the wall. This is time consuming but finishes the job off so nicely. Caulking covers a multitude of sins!

Master Bedroom Update with board and batten and Behr Marquee Paint

Painting:

For paint we used the BEHR MARQUEE one coat coverage interior paint from Home Depot. We applied Compass Blue to the upper walls and Cameo White for the board and batten. When my husband saw the first brush stroke of the Compass Blue applied to the walls, he was a little shocked! I told him not to worry, it was going to look great, “I know what I’m doing”.  Inwardly I was asking myself what the heck was I doing and trying not to let my own panic show!  It didn’t take long till I realized It looked great and I had made the right choice. That happens all the time.

Master Bedroom Paint Update

We started with the upper portion of the wall and applied Compass Blue. I taped off the ceiling using painters tape to avoid any mishaps while I used a brush to cut-in. A quick roll was all that was needed to apply this super thick paint to the walls. I had to touch up a few places where I cut-in otherwise this really is one coat coverage!

Master Bedroom Update with board and batten and Behr Marquee Paint

For the board and batten we used Cameo White. I used a brush to do all the trim work and then used a roller for the wall.

Master Bedroom Update with board and batten and Behr Marquee Paint

It turned out beautifully!

Master Bedroom Update with board and batten and Behr Marquee Paint

The after…I painted the “blah” out of that room!

The hubby was so impressed, he kept walking around the room saying “wow!”

I’m so glad we decided to try something that was a little out of our comfort zone. The room has a dramatic edge to it but still has that simple, cozy cottage look that I love. I hope this gives someone the courage to step out and try something new!

Driftwood Candle Holder Tutorial Redo

2:22 am by kim 6 Comments

 Driftwood Candle Holder Tutorial Redo

One of the first projects/tutorials I did when I first started my original blog “Restoration House”  was this Driftwood Candle Holder tutorial. That was seven years ago and I still have my original piece! This is such a simple and easy project to do and literally only takes minutes and makes a bit impact! I’ve also included a wooden post I had cut into 3 foot lengths to show you that you can use practically anything made out of wood and turn it into a candle holder. You can find the original tutorial here.

Simple & Easy Candle Holder Tutorial

Here is my original piece and my favourite, I love the organic shape of it. This one was made with a 1.5″ spade bit which is the perfect size for tea lights.

Driftwood-Candle-Holder-Tutorial

Driftwood-Candle-Holder-Tutorial

You’ll need:

  • A piece of driftwood or wood that is at least 1.5″ thick.
  • Drill
  • Spade bits. They come in many different sizes and are used according to the size of the candle you want to use.
  • Sandpaper to sand off any bits from around the holes.
  • The candle of your choice.

Driftwood-Candle-Holder-Tutorial

For my tapered candles I used a 3/4″ spade bit which was a little small but I was able to whittle the candle bottom to fit snuggly. The 7/8″ was a little too big and I want the candles to be snug so they don’t fall over.

Driftwood Candle Holder Tutorial

Because driftwood is an organic shape, you have to lay it down on the floor so it levels itself out. Every piece will lie differently.

Driftwood Candle Holder

Once it’s level, decide how many candles you’d like and how far apart  you’d like them to be. If you need to, you can get a measuring tape and mark your places. I just eye balled it.  You will drill straight down so that your candles will stand level. You can drill down to an inch depth or more if you’re using tapered candles. Tea lights should only go as deep as the candle itself to avoid fire hazards. (I would suggest using faux tea lights, they make such pretty ones now and it’s much safer!)

Driftwood Candle Holder

Driftwood Candle Holder

I drilled down about an inch. If you need to you can place some tape on your spade bit to mark how far your bit needs to go.

Driftwood Candle Holder Tutorial

You may need to sand around the edges for any jagged pieces. I found the harder the wood the more sanding was needed. You can see that the new wood piece needs more sanding.

My holes were slightly smaller than my candles so I had to whittle down the ends so that candle ends fitted in really snuggly. You don’t want your candles wobbling around!

I found a wooden post at my local HD and had it cut into 3 pieces. You can stain or paint your wood to suit your needs. I left mine natural. You can also use larger spade bits and make a pen/pencil holder. There’s no end to what you can create.

Safety Precautions:

  • I have real tea lights in the candle holder above but I would suggest using the little faux ones. It really is much safer. Driftwood by nature is extremely dry and can ignite so quickly! I’ve heard from others how this has happened.
  • Make sure your tapered candles are in snuggly if you’re using real ones.
  • Never, ever leave candles burning unattended!

I’m hoping that you will give this a try, it really is quite easy and can be done in minutes!

An Easy Stamp DIY for Canada Day

An Easy Stamp DIY for Canada Day

Hi everyone! Today I’m sharing the eeaassiest DIY that you can do by yourself or with your kids. It literally took me ten minutes! It’s an easy stamp DIY for Canada Day.

This July 1st we will be celebrating Canada’s 150th birthday, so it’s a pretty big day for those of us up North! I thought I would share a little DIY anybody can do to help with our holiday decorating. There are so many great celebrations going on and our neighbourhood is very big on showing our Canadian pride so most porches/verandas will be decked out. I always have some pillows on my muskoka chairs on the porch so I thought I’d get festive with some Canadiana ones.

Canada Day DIY

I picked up some plain white cushion covers from IKEA for $4.99 each. I found some fabric paint at Michael’s Craft Store and I had a potato. I cut my potato in half and then cut out my rendition of a maple leaf. Next you grab some cardboard to put inside your cushion cover to prevent the paint from leaking through and to give you a nice flat surface to stamp on.  I put some fabric paint on a foam plate and dipped my potato into it. It really is that easy. I just freehanded where to place my leaves.

The beauty of this DIY is that it doesn’t have to perfect…Right up my alley! The fact that your leaves all have the same shape gives it a uniformity that makes it look cohesive and put together. Great for anyone to try. The possibilities of what you can stamp on your pillow are endless.

Pretty easy to do right? I’m coming up with all kinds of things I could stamp on fabric now! 😉

Simple Coconut Lavender Salt Scrub

A Simple Coconut Lavender Salt Scrub DIY

I’m sharing a quick and simple DIY Coconut Lavender Salt Scrub with you today. This is an easy to do scrub with things you probably already have in your home. You really don’t need a big bunch of dried lavender 😉 or essential oils. I’ve made this in under a minute running out to the gym by throwing in some salt and a handful of coconut oil into a plastic baggy..so no excuses!

A Simple Coconut Lavender Salt Scrub

You’ll Need:

  • Organic Coconut Oil
  • Epsom Salt
  • Lavender (optional)
  • Lavender Essential Oil (optional)
  • Measuring cup
  • Container to put your scrub in
  • Mortar and Pestle (If you’re grinding up herbs/flowers etc.)
  • Mixing bowl
  • Mixing spoon

I chose to use lavender because I love the scent and I happened to have a bunch of dried lavender. As I mentioned before, you really don’t need to add anything but the coconut and epsom salt to use this as an effective body scrub.

If you’re using lavender or other herbs. You can grind them up as fine as you’d like. Remember, you will be slathering this all over your skin so you don’t want it to to be too rough!

I mixed in 3/4 cup of coconut oil to every 1 cup of epsom salt. You can always change this up to whatever suits you. I also like the coconut oil to be in a solid form as it’s much easier to use.

I added a tablespoon of the dried lavender. Once again, you can add as little or as much as you’d like.

I added ten drops of lavender essential oil to my batch. You can add more or less according to how strongly you want it scented

Now you can give it a good stir. This may take a  couple of minutes to incorporate all the ingredients together.

I used these little jars I found at the dollar store, they’re cheap and  you can make them air tight. They also make cute little containers if you’re giving them away as gifts.

You can now decorate them with labels, ribbons etc.

How simple was that! I hope you try and make your own.
