DIY Throw Rug Pillow Tutorial

DIY Throw Rug Pillow Tutorial

I’m loving my DIY throw rug pillows so much that I thought I’d share with you all exactly how I did it. I found the rug at Homesense and it was love at first sight! I was thinking about using it as my kitchen rug but it was too darn pretty to be hidden away on the floor. I knew I wanted to see this pattern often. It was a 2.5’x3.5′ rug which would easily give me three different pillows of varying sizes if I added a complimentary fabric to the back. I’ll share with you how easy it was to put together in case you’d like to try it yourself! I used a simple envelope style, no zippers! I did a post years ago on how to make an envelope styled pillow called the “the 5 minute pillow” you can find that here.

Throw Rug Pillow Tutorial

Materials Needed:

  • Throw rug of your choice.
  • A complimentary fabric for the back of your pillow.
  • Sewing Machine.
  • Measuring Tape.
  • A good pair of sharp scissors.
  • Pins.
  • Thread.

Tutorial:

  1. Start by figuring out how you’d like to cut up your rug. My rug had lines and patterns that made it easy for me to divide it up. I ended up with three rectangles. The middle one being the larger. This tutorial will reference to the middle piece.
  2. Finish off your raw cut side. The rug will have two finished sides (meaning they’re already bound with a hem so no fraying) and 2 unfinished sides. If you have a serger, go ahead and serge the unfinished sides. If you have a regular sewing machine like me that’s ok, you can do a zig zag stitch on your unfinished sides, this is going to keep the ends from fraying which they will! I actually did a very wide and tight zig zag and went over it twice! The edge started to fray right away and I was able to salvage it.                            Throw rug made into a throw pillow
  3. Now you’re going to measure and cut your coordinating fabric. (This will be the back of your pillow and will have two overlapping pieces which work as the “envelope” to get your pillow insert in and out from)  For your first piece, measure the length of your rug minus two inches (because that piece will be sewn 2″ inches down from the opening end of your pillow) and add 1″ inch for a hem. Eg. if your rug piece is 10″x30″ than your first piece of fabric will be 10″x29″The width will be the same width as the rug. For the second, smaller piece of fabric, I usually will do an 9 inch flap plus allow for a 1″ hem, making it 9″ of fabric. I use this same measurement every time I make an envelope pillow, only the width will change according to how wide your pillow is). The width for both pieces of fabric will be the same.
  4. Next, sew a 1″ hem on one end of  each of the two fabric pieces.Diy throw rug into pillow
  5. Now you will take your shorter fabric piece first and lay it over your rug piece, right sides together with your hemmed edge facing towards the middle.DIY Throw rug Pillows
  6. Take the longer fabric piece and lay it over your rug piece, right sides together with the hemmed edge about 2″ down from the opening side edge (L side here). Your long piece should be laying over the rug and also most of the shorter piece. So in some places you will have three layers.DIY throw rug pillowsDIY throw rug pillows
  7. Pin around the perimeter paying close attention to pin down where the hems are. Now sew along the perimeter of the pillow about 1/2″ in.DIY throw rug pillows
  8. Remove your pins and turn your pillow rightside out. You’ll notice you have a good size pocket to place your insert into. Now take the small flap and turn it rightside out and fold it over the other end of your insert. Go inside and stretch out the corners. You’re done!DIY throw rug pillowsDIY throw rug pillowsDIY throw rug pillowsDIY throw rug pillows

DIY Throw Rug Pillow

DIY Throw Rug Pillow

Have you seen those gorgeous pillows around? the ones that look like they’re made from an old vintage rug? Well I have and I love them, the price…not so much. When I saw this gorgeous throw rug at Homesense, I knew I wanted it for throw pillows! I loved the vintagey denim vibe it had going on and thought it would be great to add to the rest of the blue and white I use to decorate with in the spring.

DIY throw rug pillow

The rug was roughly 2.5’x3.5′ So I was able to get three pillows from one rug using a coordinating fabric for the back. I kept the lovely fringe from both ends to give the pillows some character. I paid $24.99 for the rug. I had the coordinating fabric and pillow inserts already so I was able to get three of these beauties for the price of the rug!

DIY Throw Rug Pillows

I had some leftover fabric from another project, a cotton/linen blend, and it works perfectly with the  colours in the rug. I used a simple envelope style enclosure so there were no zippers to work with.

I’m pretty excited about my new pillows! Thanks for dropping by today and sharing in my pillow joy! I’ll be sharing the tutorial for how to make these shortly. Also, stay tuned for a couple of spring tours coming up this month.

An Easy Stamp DIY for Canada Day

4:29 pm by kim 4 Comments

An Easy Stamp DIY for Canada Day

Hi everyone! Today I’m sharing the eeaassiest DIY that you can do by yourself or with your kids. It literally took me ten minutes! It’s an easy stamp DIY for Canada Day.

This July 1st we will be celebrating Canada’s 150th birthday, so it’s a pretty big day for those of us up North! I thought I would share a little DIY anybody can do to help with our holiday decorating. There are so many great celebrations going on and our neighbourhood is very big on showing our Canadian pride so most porches/verandas will be decked out. I always have some pillows on my muskoka chairs on the porch so I thought I’d get festive with some Canadiana ones.

Canada Day DIY

I picked up some plain white cushion covers from IKEA for $4.99 each. I found some fabric paint at Michael’s Craft Store and I had a potato. I cut my potato in half and then cut out my rendition of a maple leaf. Next you grab some cardboard to put inside your cushion cover to prevent the paint from leaking through and to give you a nice flat surface to stamp on.  I put some fabric paint on a foam plate and dipped my potato into it. It really is that easy. I just freehanded where to place my leaves.

Canada Day DIY

The beauty of this DIY is that it doesn’t have to perfect…Right up my alley! The fact that your leaves all have the same shape gives it a uniformity that makes it look cohesive and put together. Great for anyone to try. The possibilities of what you can stamp on your pillow are endless.

Pretty easy to do right? I’m coming up with all kinds of things I could stamp on fabric now! 😉

Special thanks to Lucy at Craftberry Bush for hosting this blog hop. Now you can check out some more of my favourite bloggers below and see all of their wonderful Canadian Celebration Ideas!

One Room Challenge™ | Spring 2017 | Week 6 The Reveal

5:04 pm by kim 44 Comments

The One Room Challenge Final Reveal

Well the day has finally arrived for the One Room Challenge™  final reveal! It’s been a long, crazy  and busy six weeks for so many of us and now for the pay off! I’ve been working on making over an unused and dysfunctional office/workroom space into a  Modern Coastal Farmhouse inspired room that’s both functional and pretty. It’s been so much fun following the designers and other participants as they make over rooms in their homes all in six weeks! If you would like to see where we started  from and how we got to the final reveal,  you can follow along with our previous weeks here:

Week 1 | Week 2 | Week 3 | Week 4 | Week 5

And to give you a little reminder of what we started with:

One Room Challenge Spring 2017 Final Reveal

I love it! This space will function as both an office and a workroom for me. It’s a small 9’x12′ room so I wanted it to be very functional without appearing cluttered. I removed the shelving units because I knew from past history that they can become a “catch all” for me. I replaced it with this gorgeous modern sideboard from Structube that is clean and sleek and contains so much storage space. The sideboard will hold everything to do with the “office” portion of the room. Everything is neatly hidden away and no clutter means no stress for me!

And did you see that awesome light fixture? I fell for this fixture as soon as I saw it in the Westelm showroom this spring. I love the modern look of it mixed in with some of the wooden pieces in the room. It adds the right amount of tension for my modern coastal farmhouse vibe I was going for.

ORC 2017 The Final Reveal

The top of the sideboard allows me a surface to add some pretty accessories that will change with the seasons. All the lovely accessories here and on my desk (except for the wooden tray and anthropologie candles) are from Homesense!

ORC 2017 The Final Reveal

If you follow me on Instagram, you know how much I love decorating with flowers and these faux hydrangeas from Afloral look so real! They’ll definitely see a lot of use.

I already had this brass mirror hanging in my dining room but I knew it had to come into this room to play off the light fixture and other brassy accents. It really goes so well in here!

One Room Challenge Spring 2017 Final Reveal

Every room needs some texture and something to hold extra pillows and throws and these baskets from Canadian Tire’s CANVAS collection do the job wonderfully!

The pillow in the back is a diy pillow I made from a scatter rug, you can find the tutorial for that here.

We added this barn door because previously there was so much “junk” in our little walk-in closet that there was no room to close the door! I’ve always wanted a barn door and this was the perfect place for one. It really does help with allowing more usable floor space in the closet. The closet will hold  everything to do with the “workroom” function of the space, such as my sewing machine, fabric, craft supplies etc.

One Room Challenge Spring 2017 Final Reveal

We still hadn’t figured out what to do for wall treatments until the first week of the challenge! We then decided on board and batten and it was the best decision. I knew I wanted something to go above it to add some colour and pattern. For budget’s sake we decided on this gorgeous stencil called the Floral Fireworks Allover Stencil by Royal Design Studio. I stencilled it using “liberty blue” by Fusion Mineral Paint and it turned out beautifully, you can find the stencilling tutorial here.

One Room Challenge Spring 2017 Final Reveal

We had originally picked another chair for this space but it just wasn’t the right colour and not the most comfy for sitting on for any length of time. I had wanted an office chair with wheels, but couldn’t find one that was both pretty and comfortable. We decided on one we already had and it’s suitable for now until I find that elusive “perfect desk chair” someday.

This rug from Rugs USA, is one of my favourite pieces in the room. It is so pretty and soft to walk on and goes so well with my coastal theme too.  I think I want one for my bedroom now!

You’ll also notice that I switched out the above dark indigo cushion for a lighter one. The indigo one was made by yours truly!

Modern Coastal Farmhouse Office Reveal

I’m so happy with my new office/workroom! It ‘s such a bright, airy and functional space now. I know I’ll get so much use out of it, it’s too pretty not to want to sit in there! Stay tuned for a post on what’s in that sideboard and how I organized the closet coming later. Thanks so much for joining me on my first One Room Challenge journey and don’t forget to catch up on all the other reveals!

Thanks to Linda of Calling it home for creating and hosting this biannual design challenge. It was a great first time experience for us and you know I’m already deciding which room to do over in October. 😉

And a huge thank you to all our amazing  Sponsors who made this project possible! I felt honoured to partner with each of these great brands and businesses and share their wonderful products.

Simple and Cozy Fall Home Tour

5:00 am by kim 13 Comments

Hello everyone!  I’m back again and sharing my Simple and Cozy Fall Home Tour as part of the Seasonal Simplicity Home Tours hosted by Krista from the HappyHousie  If you’re visiting from Jenna Kate at Home, Welcome! I love participating in these tours as they’re basically a one stop shop for all your seasonal decor inspiration. Simply follow the links at the bottom of the post to visit all the other blogger’s tours!

Simple and Cozy Fall Home Tour

I really wanted to keep it as simple as possible with my fall decorating this year but still make it feel cozy. I didn’t use a lot of the usual fall decor but If you look really close you might find a pumpkin or two! Lol. I changed out the vintage rug in the foyer to this pretty pink and brown one, I love the look and character vintage rugs bring! I used my favourite colour blue, along with mustard yellow and some browns for my colour palette this fall.

Simple and Cozy Fall Home Tour

The leaves on the trees haven’t changed around here yet so I kept the same green branches out here from spring and summer.

Simple and Cozy Fall Home Tour

A bit of blue and some branches and a little blue pumpkin. I made this lumbar pillow from a throw rug, you can find the tutorial for that here.

Simple and Cozy Fall Home Tour

I love this baby blue le creuset dutch oven and  it reminds me that fall is a great time for getting cozy and cooking warm soups and stews.

Simple and Cozy Fall Home Tour

I found these mustard yellow dried grasses at Michael’s and they’re mimicked in the mustard yellow throw cushions in the living room and the napkins I used in my fall tablescape. I love how well it plays off with the blue!

I kept my usual runner out here in the kitchen  and it has the blue, brown and mustard yellow that I’ve used for my fall colour palette.

I used some tall pampas grass as well as a fall faux flower arrangement full of fall flowers and leaves here in the dining room. My daughter says it looks like something from the 90’s Lol!

I kept out the faux eucalyptus that I had used in my fall tablescape. It can be kept out all the time with plenty of room for plates as well as food dishes on either end of the table.

Here’s a photo from my fall tablescape post.

We used mustard yellow and navy blue velvet cushions in the living room along with more pampas grass and a hydrangea flower arrangement. We switched out our rug for this vintage rug with shades of brown and beige. The beautiful linen slipcovers in “natural”  were custom made for our farlov sofa and chairs by Bemz who make custom slipcovers for Ikea furniture. If you want to find out more about Bemz and these slipcovers you can check out the posts here and  here.

I’m loving the new slipcovers. They’re machine washable, fit perfectly and make our fall living room.

Simple Fall Tablescape

5:00 am by kim 10 Comments

Happy Fall everyone! Today I’ll be sharing how I created my Simple Fall Tablescape and when I say simple I mean SIMPLE!  I’m also joining together with some fellow bloggers who’ll be sharing their Fall Tablescapes, so be sure to click on the links at the bottom of the post for more fall Inspiration!

Simple Fall Tablescape

This was a simple tablescape to do and I used for the most part, items that I already had on hand. I’m using a bit of  mustard yellow in my fall decorating this year so I carried that into the napkins. I left out the pumpkins to show you that you can use simple ingredients to create your tablescape no matter the season. You can see how I decorated a previous fall tablescape using the same elements here.

Simple Fall Tablescape

Simple Fall Tablescape

How I set my Table

  • Rattan chargers I used rattan  chargers to set and highlight my plates but you can use other chargers, placemats, or even table runners. Whatever you have on hand!
  • Blue Plates I love using white dinnerware because it’s simple and goes with everything (if you can only afford one set of dishes make sure they’re white!). Every now and then I like to throw a punch of colour in the mix and these plates go with the blue that I use in most of my home.
  • Cloth Napkins Cloth napkins are like the throw pillow of the living room and can add colour and pattern to your table. Even if all your dinnerware is white and you use simple greenery, napkins can add personality. They can be found at every home wear store as well as thrift stores. Instead of using napkin rings, I simply tied a knot and laid them over the plates.
  • Faux Eucalyptus I bought this faux eucalyptus a couple of years ago from Ikea and I use it all the time. I even used it as part of the floral arrangements for my daughter’s wedding last May! Any kind of greenery along the centre of the table, whether real or faux, adds a focal point and gives your table a festive look. You can use  pumpkins or fruit as a focal point and/or adding some fresh greenery/fall leaves from your garden works well too!
  • Tapered Candles, Votives and Fairy Lights Any kind of lighting elevates your table from the everyday to an event! They’re also budget friendly and easy to find. Even fairy lights can be found at the dollar store. I used these brass candle holders I found from the thrift store. They add height without blocking the view from across the table. The votives were budget friendly and I buy them in cases so that I’m ready for every occasion! I also have multiple fairy lights both plug in and battery operated..they add such sparkle to everything.
  • Bubble Glasses I call these everyday water glasses my “bubble” glasses! You can use any glasses you have on hand. Wine glasses look pretty and can be used for water too.

Simple Fall Tablescape

Adding all these elements to your table in any form can elevate an ordinary table setting to something special.  Even if you only have a few candles and some branches from your garden, you can make it look special! Use your imagination and what you have on hand. It doesn’t have to be difficult or expensive to make a lovely tablescape no matter the season.

Simple Fall Tablescape

I made this faux flower arrangement using some faux fall coloured flowers and leaves  from Michael’s, along with my faux eucalyptus. It’s a big arrangement, so I placed it on the sideboard instead of the centre of the table. Nothing is worse than trying to see above or around an arrangement to have a conversation across the table!

Simple Fall Tablescape

Simple Fall Tablescape

Along with the faux fall flowers, I added some tall dried pampas grass. It reminds me of all the  fall grasses you see growing by the side of the road this time of year. The fall colours, flowers and grasses combined together, add an elegant fall feel to our home. Now all I need is my favourite fall candle lit up and I’m ready to enjoy the season!

Simple Fall Tablescape

Thanks for popping by.  I hope you were able to find some useful information and inspiration today. I’ll be sharing my fall home tour next Wednesday so stay tuned for that.

Spring Tour in Our New Home

5:00 am by kim 28 Comments

Happy Spring everyone and thanks for joining in on the first Spring Tour in Our New Home as part of the Seasonal Simplicity Spring Home Tour Series!

I’ve gotten together with some of my all-time favourite bloggers to open our homes and share some spring, decor inspiration with you all. Special thanks to Krista from The Happy Housie for hosting! There will be links at the bottom of the post from the tours that have been going on all week..you won’t want to miss any of them. So if you’ve just popped in or have come from Leslie at Deeply Southern Home-Welcome! I’m so happy you’re here and hope that you enjoy this stop on the tour.

Spring home Tour #bohofarmhouse #vintagerugs #coastalfarmhouse #springdecor

For those of you who follow me on Instagram, you’ll know that after my husband’s brain hemmhorage and subsequent brain surgery last year we had to sell our home. We ended up moving to another city to be closer to our youngest daughter and her little family. We both were looking to buy new homes and decided to pool our resources and buy one together! It’s a much larger home than we were used to and we’ve been loving all the extra room. We’re also in the midst of  finishing our basement which will give us an extra thousand square feet of space, I’ll definitely be sharing more of that as it progresses!

Spring Tour in the New Home

Our spring tour in our new home starts in the living room.  The living room, dining room and kitchen are an “L” shape open space. There are windows and sliding doors to the backyard all along the back wall and there is so much light in here! We live near the water which is just behind the trees you see in the window back there. Unfortunately, there will be some houses built behind us in a year or so, but for now we’ve got an amazing view. We’ll have some awesome trails along the water to explore when they’re done.

Spring Tour in the New Home

No season excites me more than spring. You can literally smell it in the air and it invokes so many sweet memories. I like to keep things simple and usually start with a good spring cleaning. Getting rid of all the excess of the previous season and storing it all away makes things feel light and bright. I love adding some greenery whether real or faux it doesn’t matter. Spring has taken it’s time in coming this year so we’ve had to add some faux branches and flowers. The fiddle leaf figs are all real though and seem to be loving their new, bright home! We’ve been here for six weeks now and were able to do all our decluttering before we moved in. I love any excuse to change up the pillows and throws and usually use blue and/or pastel colours for spring. My vintage rug “Bea” adds a great shot of blue and is definitely dressed for spring! You can find my previous spring tour here and see how I used Pink!

Spring Tour in our New Home

We’ve been waiting for the basement renovation to be finished so that I can finally empty out the storage unit. I’ve emptied out a few of my things but most of it is still locked away in boxes including my tools that I need to build the mantel that will fit just under the TV.  I’m also planning on swapping out those glass shelves for wooden ones. So many plans to make this place feel a little more done!

Spring Tour in our New Home

untitled-0463

Spring Tour in our New Home

Nothing screams spring more than tulips and I got a couple of pale pink bunches to help bring in the spring vibe.

Spring Tour in our New Home

For spring I enjoy using fresh pastel colours on the pillows and throws, blue is always a hit with me. I made these throw pillows from some rugs that I found and I wrote a tutorial on how to make them here.        Baloo loves to be wherever I am and you may notice him here and there thoughout the tour.

Spring Tour in our New Home

For a table arrangement I added some faux ferns in these plain glass vases to add another hit of greenery.

Spring Tour in our New Home

Our dining room is looking a little sparse while we wait to get my furniture out of storage but I’m not minding the minimalist look too badly! Oh and this light, It was the very first thing that I changed out once we moved in and I love it! The one that came with the home was so tiny you could hardly notice it but this one delineates and fills the space so nicely.

Spring Tour in our New Home

The second thing I did when we moved in was to get this large harvest table. I wanted a place where all my daughters could come with their husbands and have some great family dinners at. It totally fits the bill!

Spring Tour in our New Home

Spring Tour in our New Home

In the kitchen I placed more of the tulips along with a sweet floral scented candle. I think Baloo wants to check them out! I also changed out the lighting in here as well. I love these large lantern pendants in here and overcame my fear of electrocution and put them up myself. Lol! They fit in so well with the chandelier in the dining room.

Spring Tour in our New Home

You can’t have a spring tour without flowers in a market bag! Lol. Once spring finally comes, our little city market square has a great farmer’s market every weekend and nothing feels better than getting some spring blooms along with some fresh baked goods and carrying them around in your market bag!

Spring Home Tour

I couldn’t wait to get a vintage runner for this kitchen! The colours are amazing and I love how this eighty year old rug has managed to keep it’s hits of hot pink colour. It totally makes the kitchen!

Spring Decor Update in the Living Room

5:00 am by kim 11 Comments

Yay for Spring! Today I’m joining together with my favourite Canadian bloggers for our annual Spring Home Tour hosted by Shannon from Home Made Lovely (formerly AKA Design) and Christina from The DIY Mommy. I’ll be sharing my Spring Decor Update in the Living Room and you can follow all the links below to see what everyone else has been sharing for spring, all week long. So grab a beverage, sit back and get ready for tons of  spring decor ideas and inspiration!

Spring Decor in the Living Room

If you’ve read my previous post on my winter decor you’ll know I started with a neutral pallet in this room. I began by removing the robin’s egg blue pillows and replaced them with these pale pink pillows. Nothing says spring like soft pastels and these pale pink pillows fit the bill. I found the little pastel water colour pillow that goes perfectly with the pink and was just the right amount of colour.

I took out the winter white throws and added this pretty pink throw.  Some pretty pink roses and tulips along with the faux green wreaths and we’ve brought in spring!

I know I’ve said it before but fall is my favourite season! I love the cooler weather, everything pumpkin and snuggling up with some cozy blankets by the fire!

When it comes to fall decor I like to keep it simple. Changing up the pillows, like this velvet harvest yellow one (just sounds fall like), adding some super cozy warm blankets and a few pumpkins is all it takes to add some fall to my home.

Coastal Farmhouse Finds From Amazon

3:10 pm by kim 3 Comments

If you’ve followed along with me for a while you’ll know that I’m an avid fan of the Coastal Farmhouse look. There’s just something about the light, bright airy and sea washed look that calls to me. Whats not to love about coastal shades of  blues, sandy whites and  taupes interspersed with gorgeous faded driftwood and dreamy hydrangeas. For whatever reason, Coastal  with the right touch of Farmhouse is my first love when it comes to decorating.

For those of you who have wondered how to go about achieving this look, I’ve created a roundup of some of my favourite Coastal Farmhouse go-to’s. All of these items can be found on Amazon and I’ve provided you with affiliate links below so you can shop the look!

1.Ektorp 3 seater replacement slipcover in white | 2. Indigo blue throw pillow | 3. Wooden candle sticks | 4. Large seagrass basket | 5. Jute Rug  | 6. Artificial silk hydrangeas | 7. Wood coffee table | 8. Blue floral ginger jar | 9. Blue ticking throw pillow

I have all these items (or very similar) and they have been the basics that help me create this look in my own home.

  • Neutral furniture makes it easy to throw on any colour and style of pillow, while slipcovers give a relaxed feel and they’re easy to clean.
  • Pillows to pile on and add colour, coziness and comfort.
  • Candlesticks with pale wood that reminds you of driftwood you’d find along the beach.
  • Wicker baskets and jute rugs that bring in a relaxed feel and texture.
  • Hydrangeas whether real or faux especially in blue reminds me of gorgeous houses in the Hamptons.
  • Coffee tables with more pale driftwood like wood.
  • Blue and white anything, especially these gorgeous ginger jars.

I hope this has made it a little easier for those of you who are trying to achieve this look. If you have any questions, leave them in the comments and I’ll get back to you.
