Fall Front Porch

My Easy Fall Front Porch

fall-porch-4

I’m happy you’ve joined me and my model Bubs today as we share our easy fall front porch with you! I think by now you all know of my love of white, it’s been a fifteen year love affair and it carries outside as well.  I wanted to keep this fern as the centerpiece and used it as a jumping off point. I love white and green together so the fern along with my white mums and white pumpkins seemed like a good fit. The hay adds a little texture and a harvest time feel and these wooden lanterns are so versatile they look great in any setting

I’ve opened up my screen door so you can see the pretty BM “Wyeth Blue” on the door. I love the colour and and the wreath matches it perfectly and is  kept up all year long. The galvanized containers which used to be tree sap buckets were found at a local home decor store.  These buckets will be great for using again at Christmas time on either side of the fireplace. fall-collage

This really large white pumpkin with a bit of blue in it, was placed on a bed of hay in the old black iron urn and I’m loving the colour! Some pillows I sewed together on top of a pair of muskoka chairs and a comfy plaid blanket make for a cozy spot to sit in the cool evenings. Bubs thinks so too!

front-porch-with-baby-boosThanks for joining Bubs and I in a little tour of our fall front porch. You can see that by using things that I already had on hand and  adding a few pumpkins from the garden centre, how easy it is to add some fall decor.

Canadian Bloggers Fall Home Tour 2015

6:00 am by kim 13 Comments

I’m very excited to be joining a group of 11 bloggers participating in the Canadian bloggers Fall Home Tour, hosted by the lovely and talented Shannon from AKAdesign and Christine from thediymommy!
If you’ve come by way of Nalle’s House  welcome! If you haven’t started from the beginning, you can check out the bottom of this page to find the links and  make sure you’re able to view all of these talented women and their homes.
Happy Fall everybody!
I’m calling my tour the “Simple Fall Home Tour”
because I added simple natural elements that were easy to decorate with and fit in with the neutral vibe I love. Other than the pumpkins all the natural elements can be used for any seasonal decorating.
We’ll start with my dining room which is the first room you see as you walk into our house.
I used soft white baby boos along with birch branches, salal leaves, seeded eucalyptus, some twinkle lights  and these gorgeous wood slices that make any tablescape look earthy and festive. I had some leftover linen fabric that I made a table runner out of along with napkins.

Next stop is the family room, I keep this room very neutral all the time and am able to change up the colour/décor by simply adding different pillows/cushions. In the fall I love to use brown in any shade, I feel it is so homey and in keeping with the season.

I kept my mantel very simple this year. I changed out the regular mirror that was up there and used my favourite twinkle lights, wooden candleholders and some cotton twigs…of course I added some pumpkins!

I love adding candles to the space and this “spiced apple” smells good enough to eat! Throw in a few sugar pinecones and you’ve a cute little no fuss vignette!

I keep the twinklelights and this pom pom wreath up all year long, they work in every season!

Here’s another view of the family room, Bubs decided to make an appearance.

From the family room you can see into the kitchen and breakfast nook. I added a bit of greenery and birch along with a few pumpkins on my shelves with my ironstone collection.

Who doesn’t like a trough full of baby boos?
Some of the greenery I used on the tables is faux greenery I got from the dollar store! Everything I decorated my fall home with  are things you can find easily outdoors and/or for not a lot of money!

I’ll stop the tour downstairs as the upstairs is currently getting some new plank floors which are almost done and I can’t wait to share with you!
I’m so glad you stopped by and allowed me to share my simple fall home with you.

The next stop on the Canadian bloggers fall home tour is Citrine Living.

Now it’s time to tour some other Canadian homes all decked out for Fall. This Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday we’re giving you an exclusive tour of our homes with lots of autumn décor inspiration:

Spring spruce up

8:18 pm by kim 5 Comments

Hello again!
Happy Valentine’s Day
I know I’m a day late but yesterday was Valentine’s Day and my 28th wedding anniversary!
It was a lovely day…hubby made me a great breakfast, got me a coffee from my favourite spot and gave me some beautiful flowers.
He made dinner reservations at our favourite restaurant but I didn’t want to go out..really felt like staying in and relaxing by the fire..I know call me crazy but it’s freezing here!
Yep thats what we did..we were both happy!

So today I thought I’d do a little spring spruce up.
Just replaced some of the cushions with newer and brighter ones.
They really look orange in these pics but they are actually more coral.
I’ve also brought in this stump I picked up and removed the bark from. It takes a few
months for them to dry up? Not quite sure of the terminology but it takes a while.
I’ve got a couple more in the garage to find places for..I’m enjoying the rustic look of them
with all the white,

I’m loving these flowers..if you’ve read my blog you’ll know that I luuuuv hydrangeas!
Although they remind me of spring our -20 temperatures are telling me otherwise..

I also picked up these mirrors at Homesense.
What do you think of them hanging from the bookcase?
My oldest daughter told me that mirrors were to be hung on walls not bookcases…
so yeah she’s not really into them hanging there.
I told her she need’s to think outside the box, lol.
And yes I know that I’ve still got pinecones all over the place…It’s only a spruce up not spring cleaning!

I hope you enjoyed the little touches of spring…it may not look like it or feel like it right now
but it is coming!

Thanks for dropping in for a visit
 and have a blessed week!

A few changes…

2:11 am by kim 3 Comments

Hello everyone!
Just popping in to share a few changes I’ve made since the holidays…
I know it’s been a while…again… but I’ve decided to share when I can and not to stress about it.
I can understand that most people would enjoy more scheduled posts but for now this is what works best for me and my family.
I usually post daily on Instagram for those of you who would like to see a bit more, I find it much easier to snap some pics on my iphone and share.
I’m @rhouse if you’d like join me.

So…all of the Christmas decor is down…well mostly… lol. There may still be the odd boxwood wreath hanging about but they can stay up all year long right?

For winter decorating I’ve kept out most of my pinecones and faux fur which just adds warmth
and coziness to these long winter days.
I made this pom-pom wreath over 2 years ago and have had it up since then..
I love it!
It’s been hanging on this ladder with the sparkly lights that I’ve also kept up, along with my birch logs in the corner of the breakfast nook. What can I say, I love birch and I feel it fits in with every season.
I’ve painted a few pieces of furniture and sold the last one which was my coffee table.
This minty one is in here for now until I can fiind some new pieces.
I would love a rustic unpainted wooden piece next and am on the hunt!
The rest of the pillows are in a  thick tweed fabric and fit right in with the creamy white wintery decor.
It’s so cozy here in the evening with the fireplace on…
but I’m looking forward to spring,,,

Thanks for stopping by…
Blessings to you!

Happy New Year!!

If you follow me on Instagram (@rhouse) you’ll  know that I’ve had a bit of a crush on pom-poms this holiday season.

These large tissue paper gold and white ones were great in the dining room. They were/are festive for both Christmas and New Years and so cheap to make!

Not quite sure when I’ll take them down..lol.

It’s been great connecting with many of you again..
Hoping that you all have an awesome New Year full of peace, health and blessings!

Christmas family room 2014

3:35 pm by kim 27 Comments

Hello everyone!
It’s been quite a while since I’ve been on this little blog of mine and I’m not sure if there is anybody
 out there or not…lol
but I’d thought I would begin where I left off a couple of years ago!
Sharing my Christmas home with you all.

This year I wanted to add natural elements…which I ususally do anyway, and to make it a little more simple as well.

Not a lot of changes in my home since the last time I posted. This year I went with natural colours of grey, browns, burlap, a bit of sheepskin to cozy things up and some gold to spice things up.

Youl’ll remember my pom-pom wreath from my very last post. I’ve kept that wreath up all year long, twinkle lights and all.

I went a little pom-pom crazy this year and added a wool pom-pom garland (anthropology hack) and intertwined it with this lovely little creamy tulle pom-pom garland that is also intertwined with little twinkle lights…added some burlap which looks gold in the twinkle light.

I tried  to keep the mantle simple this year. Having a corner fireplace means I’ve got a lot of area that can be filled…so I tried to restrain myself from loading it up and just added some large sugar pinecones, birch, little trees and my wooden candleholders. I made the white ceramic rabbit years ago  for my girls and it has a lot of sentimental value.
Then I just swagged it with the garlands and burlap.

Chose this spin on my usual  birch buckets this year.

I added a gallery wall over my tv this year to try and fill in some of the negative space and decorated my staghead with a festive wreath.

He’s a handsome fellow but looks a little off-coloured in this pic, the lighting hasn’t been the best for taking photos… (tha’ts my excuse for poor colour in these photos! lol)

Thanks for stopping by and allowing me to share some of my home with you! Hope to share more soon.

Blessings to you all!

Anthro inspired pom pom wreath

2:11 am by kim 11 Comments

Hi everyone and Merry Christmas!
Just had to share with you my anthropology inspired wreath!
I’m sure many of you have seen different versions of this anthro inspired pom pom wreath
making it’s way around blogland.
I was smitten as soon as I saw it and had to try out my own version.

Never made a pom pom in my life, but it looked so easy, just wrapped some yarn around my fingers,
tied a knot, cut the ends and voila.
I just did that about sixty more times, bahaha!
I wrapped an old foam wreath base I had with some white ribbon to hide
the green base and used floral pins to place each pom pom.
There are many different ways to make these wreaths, but this way worked well for me.
It really was easy!

I placed a bow on it using some scrap red toile fabric I had.
It’s the fabric left over from making the curtains you see here
in the breakfast nook.
I’ve used some red accents to liven up my Christmas decor this year and
I’m loving it…so festive!

The wreath looks great without the bow too and goes so well with the birch.
I’ll be able to keep this wreath up well into the winter season!

Jennifer Rizzo has done a great post on how to make mini pom pom wreaths
that are adorable, you can find it here.

Thanks for dropping by,
be blessed!

Christmas 2012

9:54 pm by kim 15 Comments

Hi everyone,
I’m hoping all your Christmas preparations are going well!
I’ve been waiting on some good lighting to be able to shoot some pics but it’s
been so grey around here and then it’s almost dark at 4!
Anyways…here are some shots I took today.

Hubby went a little crazy with the saw this year and I had a lot of space under the tree
so I used an old red toile curtain panel as a tree skirt and placed all my lanterns around it.

I placed my buckets that usually flank the fireplace in each of the bookcases. They look great there
and save some floorspace around the fireplace.

The Buckets with the branch lights on/off.

In the breakfast nook I put up some garland on the botttom shelf again. I found some lovely old tarnished spoons at the GW
and tied them with some brown satin ribbon.

I have these little mercury glass containers that I filled with foam oasis and stuck
in some winter greens. The watered oasis foam keeps them fresh.

I have a brown theme going on in the breakfast nook but couldn’t restrain myself from
putting in a little red,  It’s so bright and festive!

I’ve just added some sugar pinecones and mercury glass ornaments to the shelves.
The candle holders are all from PB that my daughters got me a couple of years ago.
They go with everything
I’ve placed birch poles all around and added some more green with the paperwhites.

Hopefully it will be brighter tomorrow and I’ll be able to show you
the mantels.

Thanks for dropping by,
blessings to you!

Christmas Urn…and life

3:40 pm by kim 19 Comments

Hello everyone!
I know it’s been a while…lots of life transition stuff going on over here
and blogging had to go down on the priority list.
With so many external and internal changes  I’ve wondered whether to keep this blog
going or not.
It’s been such a great creative outlet for me and I’ve really enjoyed it,
so I’ve decided to keep doing what I enjoy and will share when I can, no pressure!
I may add some new content but nothing too drastic!
Now on to my Christmas Urn…

.
It cost me all of $13 this year!
It’ so easy to do.

I simply used  what I already had from previous years such as the birch logs,
giant sugar pinecones and my twig lights.
The magnolia leaves were $8 for the bunch and the cedar was $5.

This is the first time I’ve used magnolia leaves and I love the texture and colour it brings.
It’s hard to see the twig lights here but at night you can see them from across the street, it really lights up the porch!

Thanks for dropping by and blessings to you!
